Salut de Bobo-Dioulasso!
We have arrived safely and are writing this fro, a cyber cafe -which is very expensive so will just do a quick note of what has happened so far.
The journey was very good and the tight connection in Paris worked out fine. On arrival in Ouagadougou, we found that the visa bought in England was not valid! But all was OK. I was given a pass to enter the country and to return the next day with the required photos and fee. Anselme was there to meet us and took us to the guest house of "les Peres Blancs" where we stayed. The next day he had to return to Bobo for practices for his ordination - and took with him the gifts from England. He was amazed by how much there was - and we had had to leave some behind so as not to have excess baggage! (not too much though!) we were glad he was carrying it the next bit of the journey!
He left us in the care of Robert - a friend and medical student - who took good care of us. We found a place for the photos - changed the euros and sorted out the legalities. We were told that we could travel on to Bobo and so booked a bus for the afternoon. Alas, our mode of transport was a motorcycle and Kathryn's first descent was not - shall we say - elegant! OK - it was more of a fall off than a slide off gracefully! The consequence was not severe for her but for the camera it was bad - the screen was broken. However, the resourceful Robert found somewhere who could repair it and the trusty camera is all well! After that we had a tour of Ouaga - and a whirlwind tour of Ouagadougou on the back of a motorcylce was something totally unexpected- but great fun. Robert took Kathryn to see a family who farm in the traditional way - and to the new presidential and ministerial buildings. The extremes of life in Burkina.
The bus journey was very comfortable - but four and a half hours long! The bus was air conditioned and we stopped briefly in a market on the way.
Anselme was delayed in arriving at the station so Kathryn decided to go straight to the house... problem - she had not checked the address! There was great discussion with the locals and eventually, a taxi took her to the Grande Mission. This turned out to be the right place and the Sister there helped her to settle in until Anselme arrived to take her to his grandmother's home for the evening meal. She was made most welcome by the family and Anselme said that a "chemise" had been made for her for the ordination! There is a sort of family "uniform" for the occasion so it sounds like a great honour!
After a good night's welcome rest and breakfast, the uncle of Anselme, Jacob, and his daughter Jeanne d'Arc arrived to show her Bobo and where the cybercafe is... And here we are! Our time is running out so we will stop for today. It is a great place and the ordination sounds wonderful (Kathryn met the diocesan direcotr of liturgy briefly last night and hopes to have time to chat after the ordination which he is busy with at the moment).
Bestwishes to everyone - and thank you for the donations which have been very well received!
A bientot!
